HUL grew sales 15% and its profit stayed flat.

Hindustan Unilever reported Q2 FY27 on 28 October. Turnover was Rs 18,071 crore and underlying sales growth was 15%, the fastest in fourteen quarters. Underlying volume growth was 7%.

Net profit was Rs 2,796 crore against Rs 2,791 crore a year earlier. Strip out exceptional items and it rose 9%, to Rs 2,795 crore from Rs 2,553 crore.

EBITDA grew 8% to Rs 4,089 crore. That is slower than sales, so margin fell 140 basis points to 22.6%. The company says input costs stayed elevated.

The cost line that moved most is purchases of stock-in-trade: Rs 3,654 crore against Rs 2,257 crore a year earlier. HUL declared an interim dividend of Rs 19 a share, record date 12 November.

The segment split shows where the growth sat and where it paid. Home Care revenue rose 21.4% to Rs 6,878 crore, and Home Care segment profit rose 2.6%.

Beauty and Wellbeing was the quarter's real earner: revenue Rs 4,319 crore, up 15.7%, on segment profit of Rs 1,235 crore, up 16.4%, led by hair care and premium skin care. Foods grew 8.5% to Rs 3,849 crore with profit up 15.7%. Personal Care grew 7.9% to Rs 2,617 crore with volumes flat and profit down about 9%.

On these numbers the read is that detergents and household cleaning carried the top line on price and promotion rather than on mix, and that bought-in goods absorbed the difference. A 21% revenue gain producing a 2.6% profit gain is not a pricing story that reaches the bottom line.

The question for the next two quarters is whether 7% volume growth holds once the festive base lifts, and whether HUL is willing to leave Home Care margin where it is in order to keep the volume. Half-year turnover is Rs 35,255 crore on 12% sales growth and 6% volume growth, so this quarter was the stronger half of the half.

Meesho · today

Meesho cut its quarterly loss to Rs 132 crore while revenue grew 34%.

Meesho's Q2 FY27 filing, reported on 29 October: operating revenue of Rs 4,131.6 crore, up 34% from Rs 3,073.7 crore, and a net loss of Rs 132.5 crore against Rs 411.4 crore a year earlier.

Total expenses grew 24%, slower than revenue. Contribution margin reached 6% of net merchandise value, which the chief financial officer attributed mainly to cheaper logistics, adding that the number should not be assumed for the next quarter.

The marketplace is almost all of the business: Rs 4,119.9 crore of revenue and a Rs 130.5 crore loss. The new initiatives bucket, which covers local delivery of daily essentials, financial services and AI services, did Rs 11.7 crore of revenue on a Rs 41.6 crore loss.

Two cost lines are worth watching. Marketing rose almost 50% over the previous quarter on festive television, and server costs rose on a GPU shortage and compute-heavy ranking models, which Meesho expects to normalise as a share of merchandise value by January to March.

The loss reduction is therefore partly structural and partly a quarter in which logistics happened to get cheaper. The finance chief's own caveat is the most useful line in the filing. Separately, the company carries a Rs 1,499.7 crore tax demand for 2023-24 under appeal, and a Rs 572.1 crore demand for 2022-23 stayed by the Karnataka High Court.

Pidilite · 1 day ago

Pidilite grew revenue 21% and its EBITDA margin fell 350 basis points.

Pidilite Industries, which makes Fevicol and Dr. Fixit, reported Q2 FY27 on 28 October. Consolidated revenue was Rs 4,298 crore, up 20.9% from Rs 3,554 crore. Net profit was Rs 615 crore, up 6.2%.

EBITDA grew 3.2% to Rs 878 crore, so the margin fell to 20.4% from 23.9%. Underlying volume growth was 10.7%, which means roughly half the revenue growth came from price.

Both halves of the business grew at almost the same rate. Consumer and Bazaar revenue rose 20.7% on 11.1% volume growth, and the business-to-business segment rose 21.8% on 9.2% volume growth.

The managing director pointed to very high material inflation and said the company had held margins steady despite it. The share closed 4.17% lower on the day.

The price history is the clearest record of what Pidilite has been absorbing. Businessworld's channel checks report a Rs 10 per kg Fevicol increase in May and June, Rs 26 per kg in July, a Rs 10 per kg discount in August, and another Rs 5 per kg in October across Fevicol MR, SH, Marine and Probond. That is the third increase this calendar year, against a reported 40% to 50% rise in raw material costs.

A 350 basis point margin fall on 21% revenue growth says the price increases have not caught up with the input cost, and the read is that Pidilite is choosing to protect 10.7% volume growth rather than the margin. For a company whose brand is the default in its category, that is the trade a market leader can make and a challenger cannot.

Half-year numbers are the better picture of where this is heading: net sales Rs 8,219 crore, up 22%, with EBITDA up 14% and a 23.5% margin. The quarter is therefore the worse half of the half, which is the pattern to watch if vinyl acetate monomer stays where it is.

Astrotalk · 1 day ago

Astrotalk made Rs 222 crore of profit on Rs 823 crore of marketing.

Astrotalk's FY26 numbers, reported on 28 October: revenue from operations of Rs 1,823 crore, up 55% from Rs 1,176 crore, and net profit of Rs 222 crore, more than ten times the year before.

Total expenses grew 38% to Rs 1,576 crore, slower than revenue, which is how the profit appeared. Advertising and business promotion alone was Rs 823 crore, more than double the Rs 337 crore of FY25 and 52.2% of all expenses.

Consultations are still the business: Rs 1,657 crore, up 45%, about 91% of operating revenue. The Astrotalk Store did Rs 166 crore, up 4.4 times from Rs 37 crore.

The geography is the more interesting shift. International revenue reached Rs 621 crore from Rs 236 crore, taking the overseas share from 20% to 34%, while India grew 28% to Rs 1,202 crore. The same release also quotes Rs 385 crore as what overseas markets added, which does not reconcile with Rs 621 crore, so treat the share rather than the absolute as the reliable number.

A company spending half its cost base on advertising to grow 55% is buying growth rather than compounding it, and the read is that the profit holds only while the ad market stays this efficient. The honest test arrives in a year when marketing does not double.

Sky Gold · 2 days ago

Sky Gold grew revenue 61% and approved a Rs 1,800 crore raise.

Sky Gold and Diamonds reported Q2 FY27 on 27 October. Consolidated revenue was Rs 2,390.65 crore, up 61% from Rs 1,484.4 crore and 18.8% over the previous quarter. Net profit was Rs 129.35 crore, up 93.1%.

EBITDA rose 89.6% to Rs 189.4 crore and margin moved to 7.9% from 6.7%. Net margin was 5.41% against 4.49%. Earnings per share were Rs 8.26 against Rs 4.38.

The board approved raising up to Rs 1,800 crore, through a qualified institutions placement or another permitted route, with an extraordinary general meeting on 18 November. The issue price has not been set.

Two things sit inside that profit. The quarter already absorbs a net exceptional loss of Rs 7.35 crore from an alleged fraud at the subsidiary Starmangalsutra, and the company completed its purchase of Purvi Gems and Jewellery on 7 October, after the quarter closed.

A Rs 1,800 crore raise against a quarter of Rs 2,390 crore of revenue is large, which on these numbers likely says the constraint is working capital rather than demand: a jewellery manufacturer funds gold inventory before it sells any of it. The 7.9% margin is the number to watch, because a raise at this scale only works if the margin holds as volume grows.

LT Foods · 2 days ago

LT Foods grew half-year revenue 22%, and its India business grew 24%.

LT Foods, which sells Daawat basmati, approved its second-quarter and half-year FY27 results on 27 October. Half-year consolidated revenue was Rs 6,414 crore, up 22%, with profit after tax of Rs 363.64 crore.

The September quarter did about Rs 3,253 crore of revenue, up roughly 17%, and Rs 180.20 crore of profit, up 10%. Half-year EBITDA was Rs 721 crore, up 17%.

Margin went the other way. Second-quarter EBITDA margin was about 11% against 11.4% a year earlier, so profit grew slower than sales here too.

India is the growth engine and still the smaller half: it grew 24% in the half year and is 29% of revenue, which means roughly seven rupees in ten still come from outside India. The Dutch business Leev consolidated as a subsidiary during the period, with no transaction value disclosed.

For a rice exporter, a domestic business growing faster than the group is the structural change worth tracking, because branded sales in India carry different pricing power than commodity exports. Whether that mix shift shows up as margin rather than only as revenue is the open question.
